Paramyxovirus infection is one of those diseases every pigeon fancier has heard of, but nobody wants to face in their loft. It usually appears suddenly, most often during colder months, and can decimate a loft in a very short time. What makes it even more difficult is the fact that there is no medication that directly kills the virus.
This article is based on video material recorded directly in a pigeon loft and on long-term practical experience. Its purpose is not to scare, but to show what can realistically be done when paramyxovirus appears – and how its consequences can be limited.
A disease, not a “cold”
Paramyxovirus infection is a viral disease, which means one thing: antibiotics do not work and there are no “miracle remedies”. The virus attacks the pigeon’s body from the inside, multiplying only within its cells. Outside the host it does not survive long, but within a loft it can spread extremely fast.
The disease is usually acute. Severe diarrhea appears, birds quickly lose strength, and in many cases neurological symptoms occur – characteristic twisting of the head, balance problems and difficulty eating. At such moments the breeder must understand one thing: this disease cannot be cured – it must be survived.
Vaccination – the only real protection
The most effective protection against paramyxovirus infection is vaccination. When carried out at the right time, preferably before the autumn–winter period, it significantly reduces the risk of infection and spread within the loft.
In crisis situations, when the first symptoms appear, some breeders vaccinate pigeons that do not yet show symptoms. This is not treatment, but it may limit further spread of the virus.
Supporting the organism – the only thing we can really do
Since the virus cannot be killed with medication, all attention should be focused on strengthening the pigeon’s organism, so it has enough strength to fight the disease.
Vitamin C supports the production of immune proteins, vitamin D activates immune cells, and B-group vitamins help alleviate neurological symptoms, which are among the most exhausting effects of paramyxovirus infection. Zinc is equally important, as it is essential for proper lymphocyte function and cellular immunity.
In practice this means a nutritious, strengthening diet, based on egg yolk, buckwheat groats, almonds and natural additives such as honey, oregano or propolis.
Why are the intestines so important during a viral disease?
Although paramyxovirus infection is viral, it is very often accompanied by secondary bacterial and parasitic problems, which further weaken the organism. Diarrhea, digestive disorders and intestinal damage reduce the pigeon’s ability to absorb nutrients – and without them, regeneration is impossible.
That is why digestive tract support becomes extremely important.
Vermes Extra – intestinal hygiene support in difficult periods

Digging Vermes Extra is a broad-spectrum preparation designed to limit accompanying pathogens, such as bacteria and intestinal parasites. Its bactericidal properties help reduce Salmonella, E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as worms, amoebas and nematodes.
⚠️ Vermes Extra does not treat viral diseases, but it can significantly help relieve the organism, which during paramyxovirus infection is particularly exposed to secondary infections and digestive disorders.
Use:
1 teaspoon per 1 kg of moistened feed.
Course:
1 teaspoon per 1 kg of feed for 7 days.
After the course, vitamin B1 supplementation is recommended, as prolonged use may limit its absorption.
Previously known as MZ Extra.
Prevention – supporting the body before high-risk periods
Paramyxovirus infection often strikes when pigeons are already weakened by weather changes, stress, racing or moulting. Therefore, in addition to vaccination, regular immune support is crucial.
Mega Vitamines
Supports overall condition and immunity, especially before colder periods, after vaccinations or during heavy strain.
Elixir
A herbal blend supporting natural defence mechanisms and reducing susceptibility to secondary infections.
Myco Stop
Helps protect against pathogenic fungi, which often complicate recovery in weakened birds.
THK
Supports digestive balance and reduces additional organism burden, allowing the body to focus on immunity.
Prevention instead of fighting
The truth is simple: prevention is the best weapon against paramyxovirus infection. Regular vaccination, isolation of new birds, limiting contact with wild pigeons and proper loft hygiene significantly reduce losses.
When the disease appears, only calm decision-making, quick response and proper support remain. You may not always win – but you can give your birds a real chance.
Good flight.
