Weather for Racing Pigeon Flights – How to Analyse Wind, Temperature and Rain Before Liberation?
A pigeon can be in excellent condition, healthy and experienced.
But on race day there is one factor the breeder cannot control:
the weather.
Wind, temperature, rain, cloud and rapidly changing conditions can completely change the nature of a race. That is why it is not enough to check the forecast only at the liberation point and at the home loft.
You need to look at the entire line of flight.

Weather is part of the race plan
The Royal Pigeon Racing Association stresses that weather is critical when deciding whether pigeons can be liberated safely. Poor conditions at the release site or along the route can cause a liberation to be delayed or postponed.
This leads to one simple rule:
do not start analysing the weather only on race morning.
Watch the forecast several days in advance and then update your assessment as the race approaches.
Wind – often the most important variable
The information “15 km/h wind” is not enough.
A breeder should consider:
- wind direction,
- wind speed,
- gusts.
A tailwind can increase race speed and shorten the expected flight time. A headwind can make the same distance much harder and increase energy demand. Crosswinds can push birds away from the most direct route.
And on a race of several hundred kilometres, the wind may change direction and strength several times.
An animated wind map tells you more than one number

Time matters too. Conditions at 08:00 may be very different from conditions at 14:00.
That is why checking weather for the estimated time at which the pigeons may reach a given section can be much more useful than looking only at a daily icon.
A five-day forecast gives you time to plan

Temperature matters, especially in hot weather
High temperatures increase physiological stress.
Current RPRA guidance advises particular caution when temperatures approach or exceed 30°C, especially together with high humidity, poor air movement or long periods in transport baskets.
Important considerations include water, ventilation, basket density and, where practical, earlier liberation so birds can fly during the cooler part of the day.
For a long race, do not look only at the temperature at liberation. Birds may finish many hours later in very different conditions.
Rain, thunderstorms and visibility
A short local shower is not the same as a broad band of heavy rain.
Thunderstorms and abrupt wind changes deserve even greater caution.
Before a race, look at:
- intensity of precipitation,
- width and movement of rain zones,
- thunderstorm risk,
- cloud,
- visibility.
A large area of poor weather crossing the whole line of flight can change the race completely.
Weather should influence feeding strategy
Weather analysis is not only about predicting race speed.
It can also help with preparation.
A difficult headwind race is likely to demand more energy than a fast race with a strong tailwind. Research on pigeon metabolism shows that fats are an important fuel source during sustained flight.
But this does not mean that more feed is automatically better.
Do not overfeed before basketing
The aim is a pigeon that is:
- properly fuelled,
- well hydrated,
- eager to fly,
- prepared for the expected distance,
- not unnecessarily full immediately before transport.
Overfeeding does not provide a reliable way to control whether a pigeon will “overfly” the loft after a very fast race.
Breeders often discuss this practical concern, but return behaviour is affected by many factors: flock speed, tailwind, orientation, motivation and experience.
Feeding should therefore be part of the whole race plan, not an attempt to control the route simply by filling the crop.
A 300 km race is not the same as a hard 700 km race
Feeding should reflect:
- distance,
- expected flight time,
- wind direction,
- temperature,
- basketing time,
- time spent in transport,
- individual condition.
A short tailwind race can be extremely fast.
A long headwind race may require many extra hours of work.
That is why weather analysis should come before the final feeding plan is decided.
Water may matter more than another handful of grain
Hydration is especially important in warm conditions.
Birds need access to clean, fresh water, and transport conditions should provide suitable ventilation and watering opportunities.
Extra energy in the feed will not compensate for starting a demanding hot-weather race dehydrated.

The biggest mistake is looking only at the liberation point and the home loft. The real race happens between them.
Wind may help the pigeons for 200 kilometres and oppose them for the next 200. Temperature may rise sharply. A rain band may cross the route exactly when the birds arrive.
That is why weather analysis should be as natural a part of race preparation as the basket, feed and entry list.
A good race is not planned only in the loft. It is also planned on the weather map.
